Your soil needs oxygen.

Get some perlite and some bigger pots amend whatever soil you’re using with some extra pearl light. Some people do a 70-30 mix (soil or coco to perlite) but I do like a 50-50 personally. Your roots need oxygen almost as much as they need water and nutrients. Oxygen makes an environment for good bacteria, and no oxygen makes an environment for bad bacteria.
